Sleeping with the Enemy - How to Live with Anxiety Attacks

If you are one of these unfortunate individuals who suffer from frequent bouts of anxiety attacks you know that it is not a very pleasant experience to live with this enemy. Yet, one has to learn to cope with it and lead a life which is as normal as possible. How do you do it?

People suffer from anxiety attacks which may be triggered by various factors. Strained relationships, troubled family, selfish friendships, frustrating work scene, monetary problems are some of the frequently-encountered issues which can throw life into jeopardy. Some people have the habit of worrying about each and everything in life, irrespective of whether it is a major or a minor issue to be ignored otherwise. The most difficult thing about anxiety is that not many people know how to live with this ailment, which cripples both mind and body.

There are various signs and symptoms of an anxiety attack which the person suffering from it knows well. Heart starts to beat faster combined with a feeling of being overpowered by an unseen force and an overall feeling of numbness. You are terrorized mentally and physically. You run out of breath and may eventually faint. These attacks may last for a short while or a long time – but to deal with it is extremely difficult.

One of the first things you ought to do if your anxiety attacks and severe and frequent is to seek medical help. While a family doctor can indeed advise you requisite medicines, it is recommended to go to a specialist who is deemed an expert in the field of mental health. These doctors are called psychologist or a psychotherapist. You may be advised some anti-anxiety medications like Valium, Xanax, and Lorezapam which you must take regularly and at the dosage which is advised by the doctor. Your condition should be regularly checked and monitored by the doctor concerned. This is important because frequently the dosage may have to be altered or even a change in the formulation may also be required for optimum benefit. The doctor also needs to check whether there are any adverse reactions of the drug prescribed and whether you are having any side effects.

The other remedial measure which you need to adopt is to maintain a strict routine of some form of physical exercise. Exercises not only make you feel good but it also increases the level of serotonin production in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical which is responsible for mood elevation. So fix up an exercise regimen and stick to it no matter what comes in the way. Gradually your body will know how to reject the negativism and make you feel more positive and happy about life and living.

Communicating with people who are happy and relaxed is also a great therapy for relief from anxiety. Being able to laugh, joke and indulge in happy and healthy activities with family or friends is a great way to change your attitude to more positivism. Many people who suffer from anxiety related disorders feel isolated and like an outsider in this world. They are normally under the impression that they do not have any one to talk to or share. This is not true at all. The truth of the matter is that each and every person goes through these anxiety pangs some time or the other. It is just that some can cope better than others. Thus, sufferers from anxiety attacks need not feel alienated and lonely. There is help available.
